Tons of people love using their garage as a space to work on their projects and hobbies. But garages can become unbearably hot, especially during the summer. This can make working out of your garage extremely uncomfortable, and you might even need to stop using it for the whole summer. But, did you know that there are some simple steps you can take to cool your garage? If you’re interested in learning more about how to keep your garage nice and cool during those hot summer months, read on to find out more.

Why is My Garage So Hot?

Garages tend to heat up in the summer and stay frigid cold in the winter, depending on where you live. This is mainly for two reasons. First, most garages don’t have any insulation. That means that they aren’t built to keep the hot air in during the winter and out during the summer. Second, the majority of garages don’t have proper ventilation like lots of windows or an exhaust fan. This is what makes the summers so uncomfortable. If there’s nowhere for all that hot air to go, it will just continue circulating in your garage, making everything feel uncomfortably warm.

How To Cool Your Garage

If you want to have a cooler garage, here are some simple DIY projects you can do to achieve year-round garage comfort:

Install Garage Door Insulation

Garages are terribly insulated, which is why they get so hot in the summer. A simple thing you can do to keep your garage cooler during the summertime is to install garage door insulation. Garage doors are not built with insulation in mind. Plus, they’re relatively large, and take up an entire wall of your garage. That’s why most outside air escapes into your garage through the door. Insulating your garage door will lead to more comfortable temperatures inside your garage all year long.

Improve Ventilation

You can easily improve your garage’s ventilation by installing a high-quality ventilation fan. These can be stand-alone fans like large shop or commercial fans, or you can buy ventilation fans specifically meant for your garage. If you’re willing to spend a bit more, we’d suggest buying something like a garage fan/attic cooler that attaches to the ceiling of your garage. Installing one of these can reduce the temperature in your garage by up to 20 degrees!

Fast Fixes

Although installing insulation or improving ventilation by purchasing some sort of large fan will provide more long-term improvements in your garage’s temperature, there are some quick things you can do while you’re waiting for your new equipment to arrive.

  • Don’t park your car in your garage.
  • Open any windows in your garage.
  • Leave your garage door open for a couple of hours at night or early in the morning when it is still cool outside.
  • Close your garage door during the hottest hours of the day.
